12V Auxiliary Battery Compatibility: What You Need to Know

Your EV’s screens are dead. The fob won’t unlock the doors. You hear a click when pressing the brake pedal—but nothing happens. The main battery shows 80% SOC. The 12V auxiliary battery is flat. This is the most common reason a charged EV won’t start.

Here’s the exact sequence to get into your car, jump-start the 12V system, and replace the battery with a compatible unit.

Emergency Access and Jump-Start

Step 1: Get inside manually.

Slide the release on your key fob to remove the emergency key blade. Use it to unlock the driver’s door. If your EV has hidden mechanical door handles (e.g., Tesla Model 3/Y), check the owner’s manual for the manual release—usually a small lever or pull cord near the window switch.

Step 2: Open the frunk (or access the battery).
